First impressions - wow, of course
Metallica fans will hate it for sure, good says I. They have the Rectifier series and damn they are but this it something else. Well, simple for one thing. Kick the "Volume" up to 3/4 or beyond and get big fat or glassy clean sounds with a hint of power stage break up at 45 watt mode then all hell breaks loose when you hit the footswitch and a massive crunch tone blows you away. I was enjoying some excellent Angus Young riffage in this mode, and it bizarrely sounded err more Marshall than a Marshall. A bit like a pro engineered / sampled best-marshall-tone-ever recording but here live at your fingertips. Back the volume knob off (he he I said knob off) and it's a bit more sedate. A huge clean sound with no break up and an excellent crunch sound on tap too. Add to this a sweet reverb, active tone controls. Yes folks my (somewhat knackered ears) heard bass boost and mid boost not just minor tonal changes but bags of tone sweep. All in all very very cool......

Performing this modification MAY invalidate your manufacturers warranty and therefore is recommended ONLY on amps more than 12 months old. Many NEW Mesa amps now have a series effects loop anyway so it really only applies to a few amps that are old or 'new old stock'.


Why have this work done ?
Well, you will no doubt have noticed that when you use say your boss digital delay in the effects loop there can be some strange phasing noises, especially in high gain settings ? It's quite common on these amps and it's been fixed on the latest generation. There's not necessarily a huge need to chop in your perfectly fine Dual Rec just yet - it's just an incompatibility with certain effects pedals. By converting your amp to a series effects loop it will IMPROVE the tone quite substantially and enable you to get a 'fully wet' effects return (if desired) and eliminate that horrid out of phase effect.

This mod will involve the part  DISCONNECTION of the 'MIX' control on the back panel. You will still have an effects SEND level but note that if you do not have any effects in the effects loop and hit the effects loop active footswitch the amp will go silent. This may be obvious to most, after all why the effects button if you don't have any effects in the loop ? But hey, you need this info to avoid surprises.



What do I do ?
1) You send / bring us YOUR amplifier. We recommend an insured courier like - www.parcel2go.com for example (cost should be about £15 - £20 - you arrange and pay for this direct with them, not us) and send to:

2) We TEST your amplifier FIRST to make sure it is in good working order. We will advise (and quote for any repair / service work if required) If there are any problems and you can then decide what to do from there.

3) If we have a healthy amp we carry out the Mesa Boogie approved effects loop modification.

4) We TEST the amp again.

5) We post the amp back to you (via FedEx) along with the circuit diagram and explanation (from Mesa Boogie) of the work carried out.



Why do we TEST the amp BEFORE we carry out the work ?

Because we';ve been in business long enough to know that some uncrupulous people will try and send back their faulty amps and get a £200 repair for free. No way, Jose ! Send us a faulty amp, you'll get a faulty amp back unless you want us to repair it for you in which case we'll gladly quote.

The RAW, VINTAGE and MODERN modes cover the entire range of gain from a sweet clip, through liquid voice up to a crushing wall of tight grind and are duplicated in both Channels. This again allows you to either find a favorite sound and dedicate the channels to slight differences or, configure them for wildly different styles.

The Channels’ duplicated modes are a powerful feature - making the Roadster not just an amp for your current style or band but rather, a lifelong companion to your music…offering limitless configurations, keeping pace with your growth as your playing evolves.  

The Roadster also features our Multi-Watt™ Channel Assignable Power feature allowing you to choose either 50 or 100 watt power for each preamp Channel. This simple to use feature expands the potential of each Channel mode exponentially by enabling you to lower the power-clip threshold or, tighten things up as needed. The two power choices also offer different personalities; 50 watts with its brighter, elastic bounce or 100 watts of tight-tracking low-end girth and mid punch authority.

Add to this power shaping magic our patented Tube Rectifier Tracking feature. Each channel features the ability to choose between the saggy bounce of the 5U4 Rectifier Tubes or the tight, bold authority of the Silicon Diodes. Selecting TUBE RECTIFIER TRACKING brings on-line one 5U4 when in 50 watts and two 5U4s when 100 watts is selected. 

Reverb is paramount in an amplifier this versatile and the Roadster gets the best! We’ve taken our all-tube circuit from the widely acclaimed Lone Star and the result is lush, ambient Reverb that blooms with sweetness as it bathes each note in old school glory.  And because the Roadsters’ modes offer such a wide range of gain levels and sound styles, each Channel is fitted with a dedicated REVERB mix control located on the Rear Panel so Reverb can be optimized for each sound.

The Roadster is available in both Head and Combo formats. The highly portable 1x12 is rear ported for stunning power to weight performance, while the 2x12 Combo features our amazing closed–back design. These cabinets produce low-end spread reminiscent of a 4x12 for crunch and gain sounds while retaining the top-end sparkle and ambience of an open back enclosure.
